Why Genre Film Festivals Are Having a Moment

For a long time, genre film festivals were seen as the alternative circuit. That perception is changing fast.

Fantasia Film Festival just completed its 30th edition in Montreal this past weekend. Leading up to the landmark installment, artistic director Mitch Davis revealed something that we’ve all been thinking: major companies that used to be “almost ashamed to handle horror” are now actively seeking it out. Buyers are showing up and genre film is on the clock.

The numbers from this year alone back it up. The bidding war that went down for Obsession saw Focus Features beat out A24 and Neon to acquire worldwide distribution rights for $14-15 million. The film crossed $450 million globally, surpassing The Blair Witch Project as the highest-grossing festival acquisition of all time. Two weeks after it hit theaters, A24 released Backrooms, directed by YouTube filmmaker Kane Parsons which led to A24’s biggest opening weekend to date, raking in $81 million domestically and $118 million globally.

Horror is now one of the most reliable and free-flowing spaces in independent filmmaking with low budgets, high returns, and an audience that continues to grow rapidly. Genre festivals have become a key piece of the puzzle for distribution and this isn’t isolated to the blockbuster level. In fact, Overlook Film Festival received 700 submissions for its 2026 edition, selecting 62 films from 10 countries. Panic Fest has also been directly involved in over 20 film sales.

Getting into a genre festival that carries weight in the industry can be just as valuable as being chosen for a general festival when it comes to syncing with the right buyers. Genre festivals give you credibility inside a narrow lane which matters when you’re talking to distribution houses who specialize in that category.

Hiike Independent’s The Circuit is built to help all filmmakers, including those with a genre film, find the festivals that align with their work and build a submission strategy that helps save time and actually moves the needle.
