ATHENS FILM FESTIVAL: A SANCTUARY FOR THE ARTS
In a town legendary for its creative spirit, the Athens Film Festival exists to prove that cinema is best experienced not in an echo chamber, but inside a packed room of passionate movie lovers.
Entering only our third year, ATHFF has quickly grown into one of the most exciting young festivals on the global circuit—averaging over 3,000 submissions annually and hosting 30+ World and US Premieres each year.
Here, artistic merit comes first. We build a festival defined by genuine connection, radical access, and real audiences.
THE ESSENTIALS AT A GLANCE
- Average Submissions: 3,000+ per year
- Premieres: 30+ World & US Premieres annually
- Focus: Independent Features, Shorts, Documentaries, Animation/Experimental, Music Videos, and Student Works.
- Venues: Multi-venue downtown festival across Athens, Georgia
WHY SUBMIT TO ATHENS?
- A Real, Packed Community Audience: Unlike festivals that cater strictly to empty industry rooms, Athens boasts one of the highest non-industry, community-driven attendances in the country. Our theaters fill up with artists, students, and everyday cinephiles who show up eager to discover your work.
- Radical Accessibility: Because we’re Athens, we believe the cost of entry should never silence a story. We offer some of the most affordable submission fees and ticket prices on the festival circuit, alongside an open, confidential fee waiver policy. Art belongs to everyone.
- Curatorial Prestige & Premieres: With thousands of submissions narrowed down to a finely curated catalog, selection at AFF distinguishes your project immediately. We proudly host 30+ World and US Premieres each season across narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation.
- Aggressive Hospitality: We don’t just screen your film; we adopt our filmmakers. From intimate mixers to artist-made awards and true Southern hospitality, we make sure every attending artist leaves with real relationships, not just networking transactions.
- Rooted in Georgia, Connected to the World: Georgia is a powerhouse for global cinema. We champion local storytelling while bringing visionary, boundary-pushing cinema from around the globe to the heart of downtown Athens across iconic venues like Ciné, the historic Morton Theatre, and Flicker.
